Background

Economic freedom is essential for national development and prosperity, enabling individuals and businesses to make decisions with minimal government interference. In Africa, promoting economic freedom is vital for sustainable development and poverty reduction. Many African countries have faced economic challenges due to colonial legacies, political instability, and restrictive policies. Recently, the recognition of economic freedom as a driver of progress has grown. Countries like Rwanda and Mauritius Island, which implemented market-oriented reforms, have seen notable economic improvements.

Economic freedom in Africa is measured by indices like the Heritage Foundation’s Index of Economic Freedom and the Fraser Institute’s Economic Freedom of the World report, which assess the rule of law, government size, regulatory efficiency, and market openness. Some countries have improved their scores, while others face challenges from corruption, weak institutions, and excessive regulation. Promoting economic freedom in Africa involves addressing challenges and fostering an environment for individual and business success by protecting property rights, reducing regulatory burdens, encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation, and ensuring good governance, transparency, and the rule of law.

Objectives

The primary objective of this webinar is to explore and discuss the significance of economic freedom as a catalyst for sustainable development and prosperity across the continent. The specific goals that the webinar aims to achieve are stated as follows:

  • Raise awareness of the role of economic freedom in Africa’s economic development.
  • Identify the main barriers to economic freedom in Africa and discuss strategies to overcome them.
  • Share effective case studies and best practices from Africa and other regions that promote economic freedom.
